Mental disorders are associated with severe obesity. Psychological assessment is part of the standard examination prior to bariatric surgery. Several changes accompany weight loss after bariatric surgery, such as normalization of psychosocial functioning and improvement of mental disorders; however, these changes are negative in some cases.
