Patient confidentiality
Patients are entitled to respect for their confidentiality, which may not be breached without herein informed consent. Identifying information may not be included in: the written text, photographs, or genealogies. Unless this information is essential from a scientific point of view and unless the patient (or his parent or guardian) has given informed consent to the publication of this information. In this event, the patient must be given access to the manuscript. The provision by the patient of their informed consent must be indicated in the printed article.

Standard Protocol Approvals, Registrations, and Patient Consents
Humans: In reporting experiments on humans, the authors must indicate in the cover letter and a specific subsection in the Patients and Methods that the procedures were approved by an ethical standards committee on human experimentation (institutional or regional). This disclosure must include the name of ethical committee, date, and
approval number. Authors must comply with the guidelines of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors regarding the requirements for patient consent for research or participation in a study. The study should not include the participants' names, initials, or hospital identification numbers anywhere in the manuscript (including figures). If there was a waiver from your institution’s ethical approval board, please note the waiver in this section and provide documentation to the editorial office that the waiver was granted.
In addition to the standard patient consent for participation in research, authors are responsible for obtaining patient consent-to-disclose forms. This is required for all recognizable participants in photographs, videos, or any identifiable information that may be published in the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Journal or on the Journal’s website. The patient consent-to-disclose form should indicate specific use (publication in medical literature, both in print and online, with the understanding that the participants and the public will have access) of the participant’s information and any images in figures or videos and must contain the participant’s signature (or that of a legal guardian). Authors must email a copy of the patient consent-to-disclose form, when the manuscript is submitted. The original should be retained by the guarantor or the Corresponding Author.
Animals: Authors must comply with the guidelines of the
International Committee of Medical Journal Editors   regarding experiments on animals. Authors must indicate, in the cover letter and the Materials and Methods section, that the procedures comply with the institutional and national guide for the care and use of laboratory animals.

Example:

Ethical principles

  • The entire study was conducted in accordance with the Helsinki Declaration of 1975 (as revised in 2004, 2008 and 2013).

  • The study protocol was approved by the Local Ethics Committee XY (date, and approval number).

  • All subjects have provided written informed consent prior to their participation in the study.

OR

  • The study is not subject to approval by the ethics committee; patients have signed an agreement consenting with the diagnostic and treatment process.

Registration of Clinical Trials
The journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology recommends that investigators register their clinical trials in a public trials registry. Upon doing so investigators should provide proof of registration as well as the clinical trial identification number. The National Library of Medicine provides a
free registry that meets the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) requirements. Investigators are required to register at (or prior to) the time of patient enrollment. Authors must provide the clinical trial identification number in the Materials and Methods section of the submitted article.

Example:
Study registration

  • The study was registered prior to enrolling the first patient at: www.clinicaltrials.gov (Identifier: NCT number).
