Mesenterial fibromatosis as the cause of an acute abdominal condition

Summary
Intra-abdominal fibromatosis is a locally aggressive though non-metastatic proliferation of fibrous tissue. It is a benign tumour which is mostly located on the abdominal wall, mesentery or in the retroperitoneal space. It is associated with Gardner's syndrome or occurs sporadically. Intra-abdominal fibromatosis often leads to problems in the differential diagnosis of myofibroblastic and gastrointestinal stromal tumours, which are however characterized by much more aggressive biological behaviour and metastatic pattern. The authors described the case of an 82-year old man operated for diffuse peritonitis due to perforation of the small intestine based on mesenterial fibromatosis infiltrating the small intestine and the abdominal wall.
