Biological treatment of patient with ulcerative colitis during pregnancy

Summary
A case report is presented, of a young woman with severe ulcerative colitis that proved steroid-refractory, successfully treated with infliximab. Once complete remission had been achieved, an unexpected ectopic pregnancy was detected. Urgent laparoscopic surgery had to be undertaken and a left sided salpingectomy performed. Long-term infliximab therapy continued after surgery and a further pregnancy followed within a few months. The course of second pregnancy is physiologically without complication. The authortouches upon the benefits and potential hazards arising out of biological therapy in pregnant women.
