INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS

Adjusted according to Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals (updated version October 2007)

Czech and Slovak Gastroenterology and Hepatology is an official peer-reviewed journal of the following societes: Czech Gastroenterology Society, Czech Hepatology Society, Slovak Gastroenterology Society and Slovak Hepatology Society. This bimonthly journal is published in Czech, Slovak or English language.

The journal publishes a wide range of scientific literature including: original articles from clinical and experimental gastroenterology and hepatology, results of clinical trials, articles for continual medical education (CME), current reviews of interesting topics, case reports, summaries or reports from congresses, symposia, or meetings of above mentioned societies, reports on new books, commentary to interesting articles, personal communications on interesting topics, personal experiences, letters to the editor, opinions, discussions and biographies about important clinicians and scientists in the field of gastroenterology and hepatology.

Published papers are sole properly of the journal; reprints of the article or its part, figures or pictures can be allowed only by the agreement of the Editor with the identification of the source.

The author will be notified via email when the manuscript is received and whether it has been accepted (no letters via regular mail will be sent).

MANUCSRIPT

Two copies of the manuscript should be submitted on white paper (A4) and double-spaced (60 types per line and no more than 30 lines per page with 3 cm margins). The top right-hand corner of each page should contain the page number (an Arabic numeral), an abbreviation of the main author's name and an abbreviation of the article title.

Along with the hardcopy (paper) version of the manuscript, an electronic version must be submitted via CDROM with the tables and figures in separate files (no floppy disks accepted). The manuscript should be written in MS Word with tables and figures compiled in either MS Excel, TIFF or JPEG formats.

The manuscript should be organized in the following order: Title page, Summary and keywords, Text of publication, Acknowledgment and Financial support source, Ethical committee agreement (if paper is dealing with human subjects or in case of animal experiment the statement verifying accepted care for animals, References.

TITLE PAGE

Title page should contain:

a) A concise and informative article title; subtitles maybe used if necessary but must be short

b) Full name of all authors (first name and surname) with academic titles and their written agreement for publication

c) The name and address of all institutions where the paper was prepared

SUMMARY AND KEY WORDS

The second page should contain a summary, in structured format, not to exceed 200 words, including the following (in order): Aim of the study, Methods, Results and Conclusion. 3-10 key words in alphabetical order should be inserted below the summary, in terms according to Medical Subject Heading list from Index Me die us.

Text of the publication

The common style used in biomedical journals is recommended including Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion. Clearly mark the position of tables and figures in the text. The text should not exceed 5 pages.

Statistics

Statistical methods should be described in detail to allow readers to compare similar information. The usefulness of experimental design, randomization and appropriateness of used methods can be discussed. Explain uncommon statistical abbreviations and symbols.

Tables

Each table should be double-spaced and on a separate sheet of paper. Tables should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals and given a short descriptive heading. Place explanatory description in a footnote and explain used abbreviations.

Figures

All illustrations including graphs and photographs are considered figures. Graphs should be plotted on a plain white paper with clearly visible letters, numbers and symbols and shouldbe consecutively numbered. For graphs use black Indian ink or MS Excel. Legends should be on a separate sheet of paper and contain sufficient information to accurately describe each figure. For microphotographs, mention the degree of enlargement and the method used. Photographs should have sticked paper on the back with description, number, up-down arrow for positioning in the text. Human subjects must not be identified on the picture. Do not use paper clips. Photographs should be included on CD in format JPEG or TIFF.

Abbreviations

Please explain all abbreviations in the text. Do not use any abbreviations in the title or summary. New abbreviation in the text should be followed by an explanation in brackets.

References

The list of references should include all authors (surname and first letter of the fist name), be typed double-spaced, and references should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they were first mentioned in the text.

Article references should be cited in the following format: names, title, year, volume, pages. Book references should be cited in the following format: author, title, place of issue, name of publisher, year of publishing. Identify references in the text, tables or figures using Arabic numerals in bracket (references should not be cited by the authors name only).

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Correspondence concerning articles published in the journal and other matters will be considered for publication. Letters should one page double-spaced with one figure or table.

CONFLICT OF INTEREST

Authors must declare any conflicts of interest concerning the article in the Acknowledgement section. Conflicts of interest include the company consultant, the fee for the article and the type of financial support (company, institution).

ETHICAL ASPECTS

Human studies should be assured by informed consent and approved by an ethical committee. The author should mention that the study was conducted according to the Helsinki declaration of 1975 and its revision in 2000. If there is any doubt pertaining to adherence to the Helsinki declaration an explanation must be included. Animal studies should be in agreement with ethical standards and approved by a special experimental animal committee with the details mentioned in an accompanying letter.

HUMAN RIGHTS

Two copies of the complete manuscript and a cover letter should be mailed in a hard envelope to the above-mentioned address. Pictures should be packaged in such a way as not to be damaged during shipment.
