Summary

Anorectal manometry is an established and widely available method for investigating anorectal functions and pertains to the investigational algorithm of functional defecation disorders. By anorectal manometry we can quantify the anal sphincter tone and also examine anorectal reflexes, rectal compliance and defecation functions. This review is focused on the definition and interpretation of measurements of standard high-resolution two-dimensional anorectal manometry. New manometric techniques that can simultaneously provide physiological and topographical data on the terminal part of the digestive tract will be also introduced.
