Summary

udesonide MMX is a novel formulation with extended release of the drug throughout the colon. Budesonide MMX is indicated for the induction of remission in patients with mild to moderate active ulcerative colitis where mesalamine treatment was not sufficient or tolerated. Thanks to low systemic availability, the treatment is not associated with traditional complications of glucocorticoid treatment and its safety profile is comparable to placebo. Limited data suggest that budesonide MMX may be effective for long-term maintenance treatment in selected patients.
